The freight derailment is a centerpiece in a string of railway safety violations.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will hold a two-day hearing to probe into the disastrous derailment of a Norfolk Southern freight train in East Palestine, Ohio on February 3. Board Chair Jennifer Homendy said that the hearing will take place between June 22-23 in the town where the derailment took place, allowing both the local community and industry leaders to testify before the NTSB during four panel sessions.
“The NTSB is concerned that several organizational factors may be involved in the accidents, including safety culture,” the NTSB stated at the beginning of their investigation. Agency officials emphasized that their goal was not to shut down the freight company, saying, “The continued safe operations of Norfolk Southern is vital to the United States.”
